      The learning connection

Hands-on experiences like building a filter engage children's senses and reinforce learning through experimentation. By seeing the filtering process in action, kids develop a deeper understanding of scientific concepts like separation and physical properties.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather a plastic bottle and cut it in half. 2. Place a coffee filter or cloth in the neck of the bottle. 3. Layer gravel at the bottom, then sand, and top it with activated charcoal. 4. Pour muddy water slowly into the filter and observe. 5. Collect the filtered water in a clean container. 6. Compare the clarity of the filtered water with the muddy water — what did you notice?
