      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Engaging with sound through hands-on creation taps into embodied cognition, where physical interaction enhances understanding. By observing how string tension affects sound, children can connect abstract concepts of pitch to tangible experiences.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather 3 thick rubber bands and a cardboard box. 2. Stretch each rubber band over the box lengthwise, ensuring they are taut. 3. Pluck the first rubber band and listen to the sound it makes. 4. Gently pull the band tighter and pluck it again; note the change in pitch. 5. Repeat for the other two bands, varying tension and length each time. 6. Share your favorite sound with a family member — can you create a mini-song?
