      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Engaging with real materials allows children to connect theoretical concepts with tangible experiences. Using embodied cognition, students learn about soil layers through a hands-on exploration that solidifies their understanding of earth science.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather a clear plastic bottle, soil from your garden, and a spoon. 2. Cut the bottle in half and place it upright on a flat surface. 3. Use the spoon to layer 3 types of soil (topsoil, clay, sand) in the bottle. 4. Add water slowly to observe how it seeps through the layers. 5. Label each layer based on texture and color. 6. Discuss with your family how each layer supports plant growth.
