      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Embodied cognition principles apply here, as children learn through hands-on exploration. Digging and observing the different soil layers allows them to connect the abstract idea of soil structure to tangible experiences, reinforcing knowledge retention.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Choose an area in your garden or a plant pot to dig. 2. Use a spatula or small spade to dig down about 15 cm. 3. Carefully remove the soil and separate it into layers (topsoil, subsoil, etc.). 4. Observe each layer: note color, texture, and any insects or roots. 5. Draw a picture of your soil layers and label each one. 6. Share your findings with a family member — what differences did you notice?
