      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Experiencing the dissolution firsthand supports embodied cognition, where children visualize and physically observe the process of solubility, making the abstract concept more relatable and memorable.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather 2 clear glasses and fill them with 200 ml of water each. 2. Add 2 tablespoons of sugar to the first glass and stir with a spoon. 3. Observe how the sugar disappears in the water. 4. In the second glass, add 2 tablespoons of salt instead and stir. 5. Compare how fast the sugar and salt dissolve — which one disappears first? 6. Discuss with your partner why the two substances behave differently in water.
