Engaging in instrument creation allows kids to experience embodied cognition, linking sound with their own actions. As they make and play their instruments, they observe how different materials affect sound, enhancing understanding through direct experience.
Try it with your learner
1. Gather materials: plastic bottle, dried beans, rubber bands, and a cardboard box. 2. Fill the bottle halfway with dried beans and tape the lid securely. 3. Stretch rubber bands around the box to create a makeshift guitar. 4. Strum the rubber bands and shake the bottle to make sound. 5. Experiment: which sounds are louder, softer, or different? Write your observations. 6. Share your sounds with family and discuss which instrument you liked best!
