What this lesson teaches
This activity helps children visualize the solar system's structure and relative sizes. Creating a mobile transforms abstract planetary distances and sizes into a tangible model they can explore and understand.

This activity helps children visualize the solar system's structure and relative sizes. Creating a mobile transforms abstract planetary distances and sizes into a tangible model they can explore and understand.
Using Bruner's CPA approach, children first create physical representations (enactive), then observe relationships (iconic), and finally conceptualize the solar system's layout (symbolic). This multi-stage engagement reinforces learning through active participation.
1. Gather 8 balls (different sizes) to represent each planet. 2. Paint each ball according to planetary colors (e.g., blue for Earth). 3. Cut strings of different lengths for each planet to hang from a coat hanger. 4. Tie the planets to the strings and arrange them in order from the Sun. 5. Hang the mobile in a sunny spot and observe its movement. 6. Discuss with your family the distance between planets and their unique features.
