Engaging in tactile analysis of soil supports embodied cognition, allowing children to relate physical properties to their effects on the environment. By actively experimenting and observing, they solidify their understanding of soil composition through Vygotsky's scaffolding as they discuss findings with family.
Try it with your learner
1. Collect 3 soil samples from different locations (garden, park, roadside). 2. Place each sample in a separate clear jar labeled A, B, and C. 3. Add water to each jar and shake well. 4. Observe the settling layers after 10 minutes. Record the textures and colors of each layer. 5. Discuss which soil might be best for planting based on your observations. 6. Draw a comparison chart showing the characteristics of each soil sample.
