      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Engaging in a hands-on exploration of soil encourages cognitive engagement through embodied cognition. By manipulating soil and observing its properties, children internalize scientific concepts and relate them to the natural world around them.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Collect soil samples from three different locations (e.g., garden, street, pot). 2. Place each sample in a clear cup, labeling them. 3. Add water to each cup and stir gently to observe changes. 4. Let the cups sit for 10 minutes and notice any layers formed. 5. Sketch the layers you see in each cup, labeling the topsoil, subsoil, and any rocks. 6. Discuss with your family how soil in different areas might affect plant growth.
