      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using embodied cognition, children learn best when they manipulate materials. This hands-on approach to exploring soil strata allows them to engage with the environment, fostering a deeper understanding of soil conservation and agriculture.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather a clear plastic bottle and cut it in half. 2. Collect soil, sand, and small pebbles from your garden or park. 3. Layer the bottom with 2 cm of pebbles, followed by 5 cm of sand, and top with 5 cm of soil. 4. Pour a little water on top and observe how it seeps through each layer. 5. Take pictures of each layer and label them. 6. Discuss which layer absorbs water the best and why!
