This activity teaches children about soil layers and their unique properties. By constructing a soil profile, kids see how different layers support plant life and ecosystems, making the abstract concept of soil composition tangible.
Constructing a physical model engages kinesthetic learning through embodied cognition. Children manipulate materials to represent complex natural processes, making the invisible layers of soil more visible and memorable.
1. Gather 4 clear plastic cups and label them: 'Topsoil', 'Subsoil', 'Parent Rock', 'Bedrock'. 2. Fill the 'Topsoil' cup with fine soil, adding small pebbles and leaves on top. 3. Layer the 'Subsoil' cup with coarser soil and a few larger stones. 4. In the 'Parent Rock' cup, place small pieces of rock, followed by larger rocks in 'Bedrock'. 5. Stack the cups in order to create your soil profile. 6. Observe the layers and discuss what plants might grow in each layer!
