1. Find a small transparent container or cut a plastic bottle in half. 2. Collect soil from different locations (garden, park, street). 3. Layer the soil in the container, starting with the topsoil, then subsoil, and finally bedrock. 4. Observe the colors and textures of each layer as you build. 5. Label each layer with a small paper tag. 6. Discuss with your family why these layers are important for plants and animals.
