This activity teaches children about soil composition and the layers within it. By physically digging and observing, they connect the abstract concept of soil layers to real-world exploration.
Embodied cognition shows that when children engage their senses through digging, their understanding of soil structure deepens. This tactile experience helps them visualize and remember the different layers more effectively.
1. Gather a small jar, a spoon, and a clear plastic cup. 2. Find a patch of soil in your garden or nearby. 3. Using the spoon, dig up a small amount of soil and place it in the jar. 4. Carefully layer the soil in the plastic cup, noting differences in color and texture. 5. Observe and describe each layer: topsoil, subsoil, and bedrock. 6. Share your findings with family — what did you discover about the soil?
