By constructing a solar oven, children experience embodied cognition—learning through hands-on creation. This engaging activity captures their attention while illustrating heat transfer from sunlight, reinforcing their understanding of renewable energy sources.
1. Gather an empty cardboard pizza box, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, and a small piece of black paper. 2. Cut a flap in the top of the pizza box, leaving about an inch around the edges. 3. Cover the underside of the flap with aluminum foil to reflect sunlight. 4. Place the black paper at the bottom of the box to absorb heat. 5. Close the box and wrap the opening with plastic wrap to trap heat inside. 6. Set your solar oven outside in direct sunlight for about 30 minutes and check if your marshmallows have melted!
