      Why It Works

      The learning connection

By actively manipulating objects and observing shadows, children engage in embodied cognition, connecting physical actions to scientific principles. The hands-on experience of changing distances and angles solidifies their understanding of light behavior.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather a flashlight, a wall, and various objects (toys, hands, etc.). 2. Turn off the lights and shine the flashlight toward the wall. 3. Hold the object in front of the flashlight at different distances. 4. Observe how the shadow changes in size and shape. 5. Experiment by moving the object closer and farther away — what happens? 6. Share your favorite shadow with Appa or Amma — can they guess the object?
