This activity explores how light creates shadows and shapes. Children will learn about the concepts of light sources and the impact of distance on shadow size.
By physically manipulating light and observing the resulting shadows, children grasp the relationship between light and shape. This hands-on experience employs embodied cognition, allowing them to visualize and understand abstract concepts through active participation.
1. Gather a flashlight, a white wall, and some opaque materials (like cardboard or paper). 2. Cut out fun shapes from the cardboard to use as puppets. 3. In a dim room, shine the flashlight towards the wall. 4. Hold the puppets between the light and the wall to create shadows. 5. Move the puppets closer and farther to see how the shadows change. 6. Put on a mini shadow puppet show for family members!
