      Why It Works

      The learning connection

By physically manipulating objects between a light source and a surface, children experience embodied cognition. This hands-on approach makes the invisible concept of light behavior visible and relatable, reinforcing their understanding of light and shadows.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather a flashlight, a white wall or sheet, and paper. 2. Draw simple animal shapes on the paper and cut them out. 3. Set up the flashlight pointing at the wall or sheet. 4. Hold the puppets in front of the flashlight to create shadows on the wall. 5. Experiment with the distance of the puppets from the light to see how the shadows change. 6. Perform a short puppet show using your shadows for family members!
