      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Embodied cognition is at play as children experiment with real objects to see how light direction and object shape affect shadow size. This interaction directly links tangible experiences with scientific concepts, making learning memorable.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather a flashlight and a white wall or large cardboard. 2. Cut out simple shapes from black paper (animals, stars, etc.). 3. Hold the flashlight at different angles to cast shadows of your cutouts. 4. Move the cutouts closer and farther from the light — notice changes! 5. Create a short shadow play by telling a story using your puppets. 6. Invite family members to watch your shadow show and explain how you made the shadows.
