This activity teaches children how light interacts with objects to create shadows. By manipulating light sources and shapes, they discover the principles of light and shadow play while enhancing their creativity and spatial awareness.
Using embodied cognition, children physically create shapes and observe shadows, making the scientific concept of light more tangible. This hands-on experience also capitalizes on dual coding theory by linking visual actions (shapes) with physical movement (puppetry), facilitating deeper understanding.
1. Gather a flashlight (or mobile phone light) and a blank wall. 2. Cut out different shapes from black cardboard to create puppets (like animals or characters). 3. Hold the flashlight to shine light on the wall while positioning the puppets in front of it. 4. Move the puppets closer or further away to see how shadows change. 5. Create a short shadow puppet show with your own story. 6. Invite family members to watch and guess your story based on the shadows!
