      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Engaging in hands-on filtration encourages children to visualize the separation process. This aligns with dual coding theory, as they create mental images of how layers interact while observing the effects in real-time.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather a plastic bottle, scissors, cotton, sand, and coffee filter. 2. Cut the bottom off the plastic bottle to create a funnel. 3. Place the coffee filter inside the neck of the bottle. 4. Layer cotton, sand, and then some pebbles on top. 5. Pour dirty water slowly through the filter and collect the clean water below. 6. Observe the filtered water and discuss what materials worked best.
