By engaging in self-monitoring of their pulse, students experience embodied cognition, making scientific principles personal and relatable. Observing changes in heart rate during different activities helps them grasp the effects of exercise on the body.
1. Sit quietly for 1 minute and feel your pulse on your wrist or neck. 2. Count your pulse for 15 seconds and multiply by 4 to find your heart rate. 3. Do 20 jumping jacks and sit down quickly. 4. Again, count your pulse for 15 seconds and multiply by 4. 5. Compare both heart rates — what did you notice? 6. Share your findings with your family — how does exercise change your pulse?
