This activity helps students understand the filtration process and the role of natural materials in cleaning water. They'll see how layers of sand, charcoal, and gravel mimic natural filtration systems in the environment.
By building their own filter, students engage in experiential learning, directly observing how impurities are removed. This hands-on approach aligns with Vygotsky's scaffolding theory, as kids build on their existing knowledge of materials and their properties.
1. Take a plastic bottle, cut it in half, and use the top as a funnel. 2. Place a layer of cotton at the neck of the bottle to catch larger particles. 3. Add a layer of activated charcoal for chemical filtration. 4. Top it with a layer of sand to filter out small particles. 5. Slowly pour dirty water into the funnel and collect the filtered water in a clean container. 6. Compare the filtered water with the dirty water — what differences do you see?
