What this lesson teaches

This activity introduces children to ecosystems and food chains through hands-on creation. By building their own food web, they visualize predator-prey relationships and understand energy flow in nature.

      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Engaging in physical construction helps solidify abstract concepts like food chains through embodied cognition. Children connect emotionally by using familiar items, which enhances memory retention and understanding of ecological balance.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather 5 different items (e.g., an apple, a toy insect, a leaf, a paper fish, and a doll). 2. Draw a large circle on a sheet of paper; this represents your ecosystem. 3. Place the apple as a producer; add the leaf nearby. 4. Create connections by drawing arrows: from the apple to the insect and from the insect to the doll. 5. Discuss what happens if one item is removed — how does it affect others? 6. Share your food web with family and explain the roles of each item.
