      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Engaging with natural materials enhances learning through embodied cognition, as children physically interact with the dye-making process. This hands-on exploration of chemical changes provides a real-world context, making scientific concepts tangible and memorable.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather 3-4 fruits/vegetables (beets, turmeric, spinach, and berries). 2. Chop each into small pieces and place them in separate pots. 3. Add 2 cups of water to each pot and bring to a boil. 4. Strain the liquid into separate bowls after 20 minutes of simmering. 5. Soak white cotton cloth pieces in the dye for 30 minutes. 6. Rinse and dry the cloth — what colors did you create?
