This activity illustrates how different substances separate based on their solubility. Children will see how colors in ink move differently, illustrating the concept of mixtures and solutions.
Visualizing the separation process through chromatography engages students’ curiosity and strengthens their understanding of solubility and mixtures. By using their senses and observing real-time changes, children experience embodied cognition as they relate scientific principles to tangible outcomes.
1. Gather 3-4 filter papers or coffee filters and a cup of water. 2. Draw a thick black line with a marker about 1 inch from the bottom of each filter paper. 3. Dip the bottom of the filter paper into a small cup of water without submerging the ink line. 4. Watch as the colors spread up the paper — note the different colors that appear. 5. Once the color stops moving, remove the filter paper and let it dry completely. 6. Compare the patterns with a friend — what differences do you see?
