      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Engaging with familiar materials allows students to actively classify them based on observable traits. By using embodied cognition, they connect tactile experiences with scientific concepts, aiding retention of complex terms like 'solution' and 'compound'.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather 5 materials: salt, sugar, sand, water, and oil. 2. Place each material in separate clear cups. 3. Add 100 ml of water to each cup with solid materials. 4. Stir and observe — what dissolves? What stays? Record your observations. 5. Mix oil with water in a new cup and note the result. Does it mix or separate? 6. Discuss with your partner: Which materials are pure? Which are mixtures?
