      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using edible materials engages students' senses and promotes embodied cognition, allowing them to physically manipulate atoms, enhancing their understanding of molecular geometry and composition.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather 15 marshmallows and 20 toothpicks. 2. Start by connecting 4 marshmallows with toothpicks to form a tetrahedral shape. 3. Add 4 more marshmallows to create edges from the center marshmallow to each corner. 4. Create a triangle shape with the remaining marshmallows. Connect them with toothpicks. 5. Discuss the shapes formed and how they represent molecules like methane. 6. Experiment with different shapes by adding more marshmallows — which molecules can you create?
