This hands-on activity employs embodied cognition, allowing children to physically manipulate materials while observing real-life interactions. As they create and maintain their ecosystem, they experience the dynamics of ecological balance, reinforcing their learning through direct experience.
1. Gather a clear glass jar, soil, small plants, and pebbles. 2. Add a layer of pebbles for drainage at the bottom of the jar. 3. Layer soil on top of the pebbles, about halfway up the jar. 4. Plant small plants into the soil, arranging them creatively. 5. Add a small amount of water to the soil — just enough to moisten it. 6. Place the jar in a sunny spot and observe the ecosystem for a week, noting changes.
