Using Bruner's CPA approach, children first create concrete models of planets, then move to pictorial representations, and finally describe their solar system, reinforcing their understanding through multiple modes of representation.
Try it with your learner
1. Gather 8 different-sized balls (or fruits) to represent planets. 2. Use a large cardboard piece as the base for your solar system. 3. Paint or color the cardboard to represent space, and place the largest ball in the center for the Sun. 4. Arrange the other balls at varying distances from the Sun, based on their real distances. 5. Label each planet with its name on small pieces of paper. 6. Discuss with your family the order of the planets and their unique features.
