This activity illustrates how ecosystems function and maintain balance. Children will understand the roles of producers, consumers, and decomposers by creating a self-sustaining environment in a jar.
Building a mini-ecosystem engages children through embodied cognition, as they observe real-life interactions among living organisms. This hands-on experience allows them to visualize complex concepts about ecosystems, enhancing retention of the material.
1. Gather a clear glass jar, small pebbles, soil, and plants (like grass or small herbs). 2. Add a layer of pebbles at the bottom of the jar for drainage (about 2 cm). 3. Add 4-5 cm of soil on top of the pebbles. 4. Plant small plants into the soil, leaving some space for air. 5. Pour a little water into the jar, enough to moisten the soil but not drown the plants. 6. Seal the jar with a lid and place it in a sunny spot — observe daily!
