Engaging with nature through direct observation allows children to witness the balance of ecosystems. This hands-on experience supports Vygotsky’s scaffolding theory, as children build on their prior knowledge of living systems while exploring new concepts.
Try it with your learner
1. Find a clean glass jar with a lid. 2. Layer about 2 cm of small pebbles at the bottom for drainage. 3. Add 3 cm of activated charcoal on the pebbles to purify the water. 4. Layer 5 cm of potting soil on top of the charcoal. 5. Plant small seeds (like mustard or beans) in the soil and water lightly. 6. Close the jar and place it in indirect sunlight — observe daily for changes.
