This activity illustrates the interdependence of living organisms in an ecosystem. Children will observe how plants and small creatures interact in a confined space, showcasing food chains and energy flow.
By physically engaging in the setup of a mini-ecosystem, children grasp concepts of symbiosis and food webs. This hands-on approach, supported by Vygotsky's scaffolding, encourages exploration and observation, allowing children to see ecological principles in action.
1. Gather a clear glass jar (1-liter) and fill it with 1 cup of soil. 2. Plant small seeds (like mustard or basil) in the soil. 3. Add a small amount of water (1/4 cup) to dampen the soil. 4. Add a few small pebbles for drainage and some small insects (like ants). 5. Seal the jar with plastic wrap and place it in a sunny spot. 6. Observe daily for two weeks and note changes in the plants and insects.
