This activity illustrates the interdependence of living organisms in an ecosystem. By observing plants, soil, and water interacting, children grasp the concept of habitats and food chains.
Through embodied cognition, children physically build their ecosystem, enhancing comprehension of natural processes. This hands-on experience allows young learners to visualize and connect abstract concepts in biology.
1. Gather a clear plastic bottle, some soil, small plants, and water. 2. Cut the bottle in half and keep the top part with the cap. 3. Add a layer of soil to the bottom half and plant small plants in it. 4. Pour a little water into the soil, just enough to moisten it. 5. Place the top half upside down on the bottom half to create a closed environment. 6. Observe daily — what changes do you notice in your mini-ecosystem?
