Children learn about ecosystems by building a self-contained environment. This hands-on activity helps them understand interdependence among organisms and the importance of balance in nature.
By physically creating an ecosystem, children engage in embodied cognition, linking visual and tactile experiences with scientific concepts. This active involvement allows them to see firsthand how plants, water, and air interact, solidifying their understanding of ecological principles.
1. Take a clear plastic bottle and cut it in half. 2. Fill the bottom half with small stones for drainage. 3. Add a layer of activated charcoal to filter water. 4. Place soil on top of the charcoal and plant small seeds or a sprig of a plant. 5. Add a small amount of water, then place the top half over the bottom half to create a closed environment. 6. Observe daily; what changes do you see over the week?
