By physically assembling their ecosystem, children experience embodied cognition, connecting abstract ecological concepts to tangible actions. Witnessing the growth and changes in their jar reinforces their learning through direct observation.
1. Gather a clear glass jar with a lid, small pebbles, activated charcoal, potting soil, and small plants (like herbs). 2. Layer the bottom of the jar with 1 cm of pebbles for drainage. 3. Add a thin layer of activated charcoal to keep the ecosystem fresh. 4. Pour in 5 cm of potting soil and plant your small plants. 5. Lightly water the soil and close the jar. 6. Place it in indirect sunlight and observe daily — what changes do you see?
