Using Bruner's CPA approach, learners transition from concrete manipulation of materials to understanding complex processes. By physically assembling their model, students engage in embodied cognition, linking physical actions to scientific concepts.
1. Gather 1 large balloon (cell), 6 small balloons (chromosomes), and 1 piece of string (cytoplasm). 2. Inflate the large balloon and tie it. 3. Inflate the 6 small balloons and tie them as well. 4. Place the small balloons inside the large one to represent chromosomes. 5. Use the string to represent the cell membrane around the large balloon. 6. Explain each stage of mitosis as you manipulate the model — can you show prophase, metaphase, and anaphase?
