Employing Bruner's CPA approach, students first manipulate tangible materials (concrete), then observe properties (pictorial), and finally verbalize their findings (abstract), solidifying their understanding.
1. Gather 3 cups of different substances: sugar (solid), water (liquid), and air (use a balloon). 2. Observe and describe each substance: color, texture, and state. 3. Combine the sugar and water to create a solution; note what happens. 4. Inflate the balloon and feel the air inside — describe its properties. 5. Create a chart with your observations: list solids, liquids, and gases separately. 6. Share your findings with a family member — what surprised you about the properties?
