This activity reveals how liquids with different densities stack without mixing. Children will learn about density and the behavior of various liquids through hands-on experimentation.
By engaging in this visual and tactile activity, children witness concepts of density firsthand. The principles of embodied cognition come into play as they manipulate and observe liquids, reinforcing their understanding of physical properties through direct experience.
1. Gather 4 different liquids: honey (½ cup), dish soap (½ cup), water (½ cup), and oil (½ cup). 2. Use a clear glass or jar for layering. 3. Carefully pour honey into the bottom of the glass. 4. Slowly add dish soap over the back of a spoon to minimize mixing. 5. Repeat with water, then oil, pouring each slowly. 6. Observe how the liquids form distinct layers and discuss why they stay separate.
