What this lesson teaches

Children learn about light and shadow by creating puppets and observing how different angles change their shape on the wall. This hands-on experience connects the abstract concept of light with real-world application in storytelling.

      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using light to create shadows engages children's visual and tactile senses, supporting embodied cognition. As they experiment with angles and distances, they develop spatial awareness and understand the principles of light refraction and shadow formation.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Cut out shapes from an old cardboard box to make puppets (animals, people, etc.). 2. Set up a lamp or flashlight in a dark room, pointing towards a blank wall. 3. Hold your puppets between the light source and the wall to cast shadows. 4. Move the puppets closer or farther to see how their size changes on the wall. 5. Create a short story using your puppets and perform it for your family. 6. Discuss what happens to the shadows when you change the light's position.
