      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Creating shadows engages children in embodied cognition, helping them visualize light pathways and understand how different angles affect shadow size. This hands-on experience reinforces concepts through real-time observation.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather a strong flashlight or torch and a blank wall. 2. Cut out animal shapes from cardboard (like butterflies or cats). 3. Hold the cutouts in front of the flashlight, pointing them towards the wall. 4. Move the cutouts closer and further from the light source to observe shadow size changes. 5. Experiment with creating stories using your puppets and changing shadow sizes. 6. Share your shadow stories with family members and discuss how light makes this possible.
