This activity helps children visualize and understand the structure of Earth. By creating distinct layers, they learn about the crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core in a tangible way.
Embodied cognition emphasizes understanding through physical creation. By manipulating materials to represent Earth’s layers, children engage with the content, making complex geology concepts accessible and memorable.
1. Gather materials: a clear plastic bottle, colored clay (brown, yellow, red, and blue), and a knife (for adult use only). 2. Cut the top of the plastic bottle off about 5 cm from the base. 3. Shape the brown clay to represent the crust and press it at the bottom inside the bottle. 4. Use yellow clay for the mantle, shaping and layering it above the crust. 5. Add red clay for the outer core, then finish with blue clay for the inner core on top. 6. Discuss the characteristics of each layer with your family.
