This activity uses embodied cognition, allowing children to physically manipulate objects while learning. As they construct their models, they create meaningful mental images of atomic structure, enhancing recall and understanding.
1. Gather 10 jellybeans (or any small candies) and 12 toothpicks. 2. Choose one color for protons (e.g., red) and another for neutrons (e.g., blue). 3. Use the first 5 jellybeans as protons and the next 5 as neutrons, attaching them together with toothpicks to form the nucleus. 4. Take 2 different colored jellybeans to represent electrons and attach them to toothpicks to stick out from the nucleus. 5. Draw a diagram of your atom model and label the parts. 6. Share your model with your family and explain how it represents an atom.
