Using embodied cognition, this hands-on activity allows children to manipulate light and observe real-time outcomes. By seeing the effects of their puppet movements on shadows, they connect abstract concepts of light and shadow with tangible experiences.
1. Gather a flashlight, a white wall, and some cardboard. 2. Cut out shapes from the cardboard to make your puppets. 3. Set up the flashlight facing the wall where you want to project shadows. 4. Hold the puppets in front of the flashlight and adjust the distance to see shadow changes. 5. Experiment with moving the puppets closer and farther away — what happens to the shadow? 6. Create a mini shadow play and invite your family to watch!
