Using embodied cognition, children physically interact with light sources and objects, deepening their understanding of how shadows are formed. This hands-on approach engages them in learning as they observe the immediate effects of their actions, reinforcing the concepts of light and shape relationships.
1. Gather a flashlight or lamp, thin cardboard, and scissors. 2. Cut out different shapes from the cardboard (stars, animals, etc.). 3. Set the flashlight up against a wall in a dimly lit room. 4. Hold the cut-out shapes in front of the light source and observe the shadows they cast. 5. Experiment with distance: move the shapes closer and farther. What changes? 6. Create a short story using your shadow puppets — act it out and share it with your family!
