      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Learning through observation allows children to connect abstract concepts to real-life examples. By nurturing their garden, they engage in embodied cognition, physically interacting with their environment to reinforce their understanding of plant biology.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Take a clear glass jar and fill it with soil up to halfway. 2. Plant some seeds (like mung beans) into the soil about 2 cm deep. 3. Water the soil gently until it’s moist but not soggy. 4. Place the jar in a sunny spot and observe daily. 5. Record any changes you see in the plants over a week. 6. Share your observations with a family member — what surprises did you notice?
