      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using embodied cognition, children physically interact with different soil layers, enhancing their retention of concepts. The tactile experience of layering soil engages multiple senses, making scientific processes memorable and relatable.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather a clear plastic bottle and cut it in half to use as a container. 2. Collect samples of different soil types: topsoil, clay, sand, and humus. 3. Layer the soil samples in the bottle starting with the heaviest at the bottom (clay) and the lightest at the top (topsoil). 4. Observe how the layers separate clearly; make note of the colors and textures. 5. Use a ruler to measure the height of each layer and record your findings. 6. Discuss with your partner which layer you think is most beneficial for plants.
