      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Using tangible materials to represent soil layers engages the brain's visual and tactile senses, aligning with dual coding theory. Children create a mental visual of soil stratification that enhances retention of the information.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Gather a clear plastic bottle, soil, sand, pebbles, and a spoon. 2. Cut the plastic bottle in half and use the bottom half. 3. Pour a layer of pebbles (2 cm) at the bottom for drainage. 4. Add a layer of sand (3 cm) above the pebbles. 5. Finally, add a layer of soil (5 cm) on top of the sand. 6. Observe the layers and label each one — what did you notice about the colors?
