This activity demonstrates how saltwater conducts electricity, showing the principles of electrolytes in action. Children will learn about conduction and the role of ions in electrical flow.
Hands-on experiments engage children by allowing them to visualize electric currents. The concept of conduction becomes tangible as they see the bulb light up, reinforcing the understanding of how materials can influence electrical pathways, in line with Vygotsky's scaffolding theory.
1. Gather a small plastic cup, 2 wires with alligator clips, a light bulb, and 1 tablespoon of table salt. 2. Fill the cup with 200 ml of warm water and dissolve the salt. 3. Attach one wire to the positive side of the light bulb and the other to the negative side. 4. Connect the first wire to one end of the saltwater cup. 5. Connect the second wire to the other end of the cup and watch the bulb light up! 6. Experiment with different amounts of salt — how does it affect the brightness?
