      Why It Works

      The learning connection

Engaging in building a living system puts children in the role of observer and creator. This embodies Vygotsky's scaffolding, as they use tangible materials to visualize and understand complex interactions in nature.

      Extend the Lesson

      Try it with your learner

      1. Take a clear plastic container and fill it with 2 cm of soil. 2. Plant small seeds (like mustard or coriander) in the soil, spaced apart. 3. Add 2 small stones for drainage and a few twigs for structure. 4. Pour a little water to moisten the soil. 5. Seal the container with a lid or plastic wrap. 6. Place it in sunlight and observe changes daily — what happens after a week?
