By using red cabbage juice, students engage in embodied cognition as they physically interact with natural materials. This hands-on experiment allows them to visualize chemical reactions, solidifying their understanding of acids and bases through a sensory experience.
1. Chop half a red cabbage into small pieces and place in a pot. 2. Add 2 cups of water and boil for 15 minutes to extract the color. 3. Strain the liquid into a bowl — this is your pH indicator! 4. Gather different liquids (lemon juice, soap water, vinegar, etc.). 5. Pour a small amount of each liquid into separate clear cups and add a tablespoon of cabbage juice. 6. Observe and record the color changes — which liquids are acidic or basic?
